Commending the Nation of Greece

WHEREAS, the Nation of Greece will observe its 200th anniversary of its declaration of the War of Independence from the Ottoman Turks on March 25th, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453 and for centuries following had attempted uprisings against the Ottoman rule; and

WHEREAS, the Greek revolt began on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Levra in the Peloponnese; and

WHEREAS, after the Greeks experienced early successes on the battlefield, they received strong sympathy in Europe by intellectuals and academics promoting the Greek cause; and

WHEREAS, after the Battle of Navarino where combined naval forces from Britain, France and Russia destroyed an Ottoman-Egyptian fleet and the Treaty of Edirne was signed in 1829 establishing an Independent Greek state; and

WHEREAS, the Greek Revolution of 1821 has become an essential element of Greek history and a part of global history; and

WHEREAS, Greek contributions to society and abroad have left a mark on the last 200 years; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Nation of Greece on the occasion of its 200th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the academy's service to generations of Virginians.
