Celebrating the life of Henry Richard Appelbaum.

WHEREAS, Henry Richard Appelbaum of Arlington, a former intelligence officer who ably served four United States presidents, died on December 16, 2018; and

WHEREAS, a native of Rochester, New York, Henry “Hank” Richard Appelbaum graduated with honors from Harvard University and earned a master’s degree from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University; and

WHEREAS, in 1966, Hank Appelbaum began his long career in government with the United States Department of State; after a posting in Uruguay as a foreign service officer, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency and was assigned to National Security Council staff; and

WHEREAS, Hank Appelbaum subsequently became an editor for the President’s Daily Brief, a daily report of sensitive intelligence materials presented to the president, vice president, and other high-ranking officials; and

WHEREAS, Hank Appelbaum’s extensive knowledge of political geography and history served him well during oral briefings on complex subjects; he ultimately became deputy chief of the briefing team and was lauded for his expertise and professionalism; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement from the briefing team, Hank Appelbaum continued to work with the Central Intelligence Agency on contract as an analyst and publications editor; he was cited in The President’s Book of Secrets: The Untold Story of Intelligence Briefings to America's Presidents from Kennedy to Obama and contributed a chapter to Stories from Langley: A Glimpse Inside the CIA; and

WHEREAS, Hank Appelbaum will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Amy; his children, Nancy and Sam, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Henry Richard Appelbaum, a former intelligence officer and a respected member of the Arlington community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry Richard Appelbaum as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
