WHEREAS, in 2019, Fairfax County awarded contracts to install solar power arrays at more than 100 facilities, including dozens of Fairfax County Public Schools’ buildings, significantly increasing the county’s sustainable energy output; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County and Fairfax County Public Schools spent six months jointly evaluating proposals for a solar power purchase agreement, in which providers install, operate, and maintain equipment at no up-front cost and customers only purchase electricity; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County awarded contracts to six solar power providers for roof-mounted, canopy-mounted, and carport-mounted solar panels at 113 locations, including 87 school buildings, several park facilities, and a Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority site; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County’s solar power purchase agreements are projected to save more than $60 million in electricity costs by generating approximately 1.73 million megawatt hours of clean, renewable energy and reduce the county’s carbon footprint by preventing the emission of more than 1.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide; and

WHEREAS, the solar power equipment will provide a valuable learning lab for students at Fairfax County Public Schools, which has previously earned accolades from the Virginia Energy Efficiency Council for its Get2Green program to encourage energy conservation and good environmental stewardship; and

WHEREAS, Fairfax County’s rideable contracts may help neighboring jurisdictions benefit from the same rates and terms to install their own solar equipment, further increasing energy efficiency in the region; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Fairfax County for its work to preserve the environment through the installation of solar power arrays at county facilities; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Fairfax County as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its commitment to protecting the environment through the use of green technology.
