2018 SPECIAL SESSION II
WHEREAS, AALEAD, the only youth development organization in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area dedicated to supporting Asian American youths, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018; and
WHEREAS, in 1998, Sandy Dang founded AALEAD (Asian American Youth Leadership Empowerment And Development) to provide resources and support to young Vietnamese immigrants who were facing challenges similar to those that she experienced as a refugee years earlier; and
WHEREAS, AALEAD originally focused on the Vietnamese refugee and immigrant population in Washington, D.C., but has since opened offices in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Fairfax County and now supports young people from low-income families representing 23 different Asian and Pacific ethnicities; and
WHEREAS, utilizing afterschool, summer, and mentoring programs, AALEAD helps underserved youths achieve educational empowerment, develop their identities, experience other cultures, and participate in leadership opportunities; and
WHEREAS, AALEAD currently serves more than 500 young people in pre-kindergarten through community college and provides nearly 2,000 mentoring hours and 330 educational workshops each year to ensure that young people succeed academically and receive the tools and skills to become leaders in their communities; and
WHEREAS, young people in AALEAD programs report feeling greater self-confidence, less stress, and better prepared to be a leader in school and social situations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That AALEAD hereby be commended for its work to support and empower Asian American youths on the occasion of its 20th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to AALEAD as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the organization’s work to strengthen communities in the Commonwealth.
