2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Susan H. Kelly, a respected entrepreneur and a passionate community volunteer, has served the Chesapeake community for eight years as a member of the Chesapeake City Council; and
WHEREAS, Susan “Suzy” Kelly is the chief executive officer of Jo-Kell Inc., a woman-owned small business that specializes in shipboard and high-tech industrial automation parts, systems, and services for the United States Navy; and
WHEREAS, under Suzy Kelly’s leadership, Jo-Kell has grown to become a world-class electrical distribution firm and earned recognition from Northrup Grumman as Supplier of the Year; the company employs more than 60 people, with offices in Chesapeake, Richmond, and Jacksonville, Florida; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the community, Suzy Kelly ran for and was elected to the Chesapeake City Council in 2010 and was subsequently elected to a second term in 2014; during her time on the council, she worked to build community engagement and used her business acumen to promote sound public policy; and
WHEREAS, Suzy Kelly also offered her leadership and expertise to a host of boards, committees, and commissions, and she founded Chesapeake Can Do, a program that encourages organizations to develop food drives to alleviate hunger in the community, with Jo-Kell leading by example and donating more than 5,000 pounds of food every year; and
WHEREAS, Suzy Kelly has earned numerous awards and accolades for her personal and professional achievements on behalf of the residents of Chesapeake, including the Athena Leadership Award from Athena International and the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award from Old Dominion University; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Susan H. Kelly hereby be commended for her eight years of service to the residents of Chesapeake on the Chesapeake City Council; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Susan H. Kelly as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for her contributions to the Chesapeake community.
