SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 547 Offered May 30, 2018 Commending Louis J. Tayon, Jr. ---------- Patron-- Cosgrove ----------

WHEREAS, Louis J. Tayon, Jr., helped enhance the educational process for Chesapeake students as a member of the Chesapeake School Board from 2014 to 2018; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tayon grew up in Chesapeake, where he graduated from Oscar Smith High School; he holds degrees from Old Dominion University and Nova Southeastern University, served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the United States Coast Guard Reserve for more than two decades; and

WHEREAS, after returning home to the Commonwealth, Louis Tayon joined the Chesapeake Police Department; he became the first Youth Services Officer assigned to Indian River High School and Indian River Middle School and retired as deputy chief after 40 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tayon shared his law-enforcement expertise as a consultant for the Police Executive Research Forum and an adjunct instructor at Tidewater Community College, and he has served the community as a past president of the Great Bridge Rotary Club and the South Norfolk Ruritan Club, as well as a member and former chair of the Chesapeake Jubilee Board; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service, Louis Tayon ran for and was elected to the Chesapeake School Board in May 2014; during his time on the board, he worked to ensure that students had the tools to build a foundation for success in higher education and careers and become responsible citizens of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Louis Tayon also supports students as a member of the Chesapeake Public Schools Education Foundation and is a mentor for the Grassfield High School STRIVE Program; he has earned numerous awards and accolades for his personal and professional achievements as a law-enforcement officer and a community leader; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Louis J. Tayon, Jr., hereby be commended for his service to the young people of Chesapeake as a member of the Chesapeake School Board; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Louis J. Tayon, Jr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his contributions to the Chesapeake community.
