SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 514
Celebrating the life of Robert Emmett Speas.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, May 14, 2018
 

WHEREAS, Robert Emmett Speas, a successful businessman, dedicated public servant, and active member of the Powhatan community, died on March 25, 2018; and

WHEREAS, a native of Cumberland County, Robert “Bob” Speas honorably served his country during the Korean War, then returned to the Commonwealth to complete his education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; graduating with the class of 1957, he remained an avid Hokie throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, Bob Speas worked in the insurance and pharmaceuticals industries before he purchased Powhatan Farm Supply, a Southern States dealership, which he operated until his retirement; he also served as a state board member of the Virginia Farm Bureau; and

WHEREAS, possessed of a servant’s heart, Bob Speas volunteered his time and talents with many charitable causes and was an active member of the Freemasons, the Shriners, and the Ruritans; he supported his fellow veterans with the local American Legion and at the veterans medical center in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to his fellow residents, Bob Speas also ran for and was elected to the Powhatan Board of Supervisors, and he served as the 4th District chair of the Republican Party of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Bob Speas enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon; and

WHEREAS, Bob Speas will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Vivian; their daughter, Suzanne Obenshain, and her family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robert Emmett Speas; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Emmett Speas as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
