2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Russell Willard Simpson, a respected veteran in the Fairfax County community, died on February 12, 2018; and
WHEREAS, a native of Madison Township, West Virginia, Russell “Russ” Willard Simpson relocated to Belpre, Ohio, with his family; he graduated from Belpre High School, where he excelled in mathematics, played violin in the orchestra, and ran track; and
WHEREAS, Russ Simpson joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to the nation during World War II, enlisting in the United States Navy on March 4, 1941; he spent most of the war on the USS Philadelphia and went on to serve in the navy for a total of 22 years, retiring as a master chief radioman; and
WHEREAS, Russ Simpson moved to Vienna near the end of his military career and continued to serve the United States in civil service for another 17 years; he proudly supported his fellow veterans as a longtime member of American Legion Post 180; and
WHEREAS, Russ Simpson enjoyed coin collecting, and he was an avid reader on a variety of subjects, particularly World War II and cryptography; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Mary, and a son, Donald, Russ Simpson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Dian and Gloria, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Russell Willard Simpson; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Russell Willard Simpson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
