2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, for 40 years, Brandon Middle School has given students in Virginia Beach the tools to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens of the Commonwealth in a safe, supportive, and academically rigorous environment; and
WHEREAS, Brandon Middle School was established in 1978 as Brandon Junior High School with Charles A. Atkinson as its first principal; in the 1980s, it was the second-largest public school in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Brandon Middle School currently serves more than 1,200 students, evenly divided between three grade levels and representing numerous ethnicities and cultures; the school offers multiple special education, gifted and talented, and English as a second language programs; and
WHEREAS, more than 80 percent of Brandon Middle School’s student body participates in co-curricular activities such as athletic and academic competitions and pop-up classes, where teachers share unique lessons and activities; and
WHEREAS, Brandon Middle School is active in the community, building strong relationships with parents, families, and local businesses and organizations to enhance the learning experience for all students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Brandon Middle School hereby be commended on the occasion of its 40th anniversary in 2018; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Brandon Middle School as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the school’s contributions to students in Virginia Beach.
