Commending the Gate City High School boys' basketball team.

WHEREAS, the Gate City High School boys’ basketball team won its first state title with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 2A state championship on March 9, 2018; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City High School Blue Devils defeated the defending state champion Robert E. Lee High School Fighting Leemen by a score of 80 - 65 in the state final at the Siegel Center in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Blue Devils dominated the state final, leading by 10 points at halftime and outpacing their opponents by as many as 18 points in the third quarter; the team finished the season with an impressive 28 - 2 record; and

WHEREAS, Gate City High School’s Mac McClung led the game with an incredible 47 points; he finished the season with 1,153 points and his high school career with 2,801 points overall, setting three Virginia High School League records for most points in a state championship final, most points in a season, and all-time leading scorer; and

WHEREAS, the win in the state final also marked the 400th career coaching victory for Scott Vermillion, who has led the Gate City Blue Devils for 15 years; he was ably supported by assistant coaches Shannon Boy, Greg Ervin, Chris Fugate, Jamie Hackney, Keith Warner, Justin Seaver, and Fred Selfe; managers Chase Smith, Justin Smith, Caleb Spicer, and Isaac Stapleton; bookkeeper Gary Arwood; statistician John Reed Barnes; and athletic director Brent Roberts; and

WHEREAS, the Gate City Blue Devils’ victorious season is a testament to the skill, determination, and hard work of all the student-athletes—Jon Compton, Bradley Dean, Zac Ervin, David George, Jake Hicks, Grayson Jenkins, Mac McClung, Logan Noe, Charlie Quinn, Jonathan Sallee, Andrew Sharpe, and Drew Vermillion—as well as the passionate support of the entire Gate City High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Gate City High School boys’ basketball team hereby be commended on winning the Virginia High School League Class 2A state championship in 2018; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Scotty Vermillion, head coach of the Gate City High School boys’ basketball team, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the team’s achievements and best wishes for the future.
