2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, the City of Roanoke was selected as an All-America City by the National Civic League for a record-setting seventh time in 2017; and
WHEREAS, the All-America City Award is the nation’s oldest community recognition program and is presented annually to 10 cities, towns, neighborhoods, and regions that have produced tangible results in addressing local or national issues, as has the City of Roanoke; and
WHEREAS, since the All-America City program was established in 1949, Roanoke has won the award in 1952, 1979, 1982, 1988, 1996, and 2012, more than any other city; and
WHEREAS, Roanoke received the 2017 All-America City Award for its work to improve literacy and school readiness among children from low-income families through the Star City Reads initiative; and
WHEREAS, Star City Reads is a partnership between Roanoke city officials and local schools, businesses, and community organizations, with special assistance from Roanoke City Public Schools superintendent Rita Bishop, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra music director David Stewart Wiley, and Roanoke Public Libraries director Sheila Umberger; and
WHEREAS, several Roanoke leaders accepted the All-America City Award in June 2017 at the National Civic League’s annual conference in Denver, Colorado; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the City of Roanoke hereby be commended on its selection as a 2017 All-America City; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sherman P. Lea, Sr., Mayor of the City of Roanoke, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the city’s outstanding achievements in promoting childhood literacy.
