2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
18200072DWHEREAS, Jacob Floyd Thompson, a native of Danville and a graduate of Tunstall High School, was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the University of Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, at Tunstall High School, Jacob Thompson helped the baseball team win two state championships, compiling a 25 - 3 record with 177 innings pitched, 278 strikeouts, and a 1.27 Earned Run Average (ERA); and
WHEREAS, in 2006, Jacob Thompson won 10 games with the University of Virginia Cavaliers during his freshman season and threw the first complete game shutout of his career with eight strikeouts; and
WHEREAS, Jacob Thompson’s best season with the Virginia Cavaliers came in 2007, when he went 11 - 0 with a 1.50 ERA and struck out 101 batters; that same year he was selected as a member of Team USA’s Collegiate National Team and pitched in the gold medal game; and
WHEREAS, in his college career, Jacob Thompson compiled a 27 - 8 record with a 2.65 career ERA, pitching 296 innings (fifth all-time) and striking out 248 batters (sixth all-time); and
WHEREAS, Jacob Thompson was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft and started his professional career before a hometown crowd as a member of the Danville Braves; and
WHEREAS, after his retirement from professional baseball in 2011, Jacob Thompson served students as an academic support teacher and a pitching coach at Tunstall High School and currently works at Dan River High School, where he is an assistant baseball coach; and
WHEREAS, Jacob Thompson was officially inducted along with 15 other former players and coaches at the University of Virginia’s Step Up to the Plate event on January 27, 2018; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Jacob Floyd Thompson hereby be commended on his selection as a member of the University of Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jacob Floyd Thompson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his achievements.
