2018 SPECIAL SESSION I
18200057DWHEREAS, in 2018, Verl Brown retired as head coach of the Galax High School boys’ basketball team after nearly four decades of leadership in multiple school athletics programs; and
WHEREAS, Verl Brown attended the Rosenwald-Felts School before enrolling at Galax High School as a seventh-grade student; and
WHEREAS, Verl Brown graduated from Ferrum College, where he helped the football team win a national championship, and worked at Southwestern Virginia Training Center before returning to Galax High School; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his 39-year career, Verl Brown helped countless students achieve success in athletics and in the classroom, as well as become responsible, active members of the community; and
WHEREAS, having coached numerous Galax High School boys’, girls’, varsity, and junior varsity teams, Verl Brown spent the past 21 years as head coach of the boys’ basketball team, winning more than 300 games and back-to-back state championships in 2011 and 2012; and
WHEREAS, Verl Brown is a natural leader who built strong personal relationships with his players, while holding them to high expectations and emphasizing the importance of respecting yourself and others; as a testament to his leadership, both of his state championship basketball teams also earned the sportsmanship award; and
WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Verl Brown plans to spend more time with his beloved family and will continue to support Galax High School teams as a volunteer; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Verl Brown, an icon in Galax High School sports, hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement as head coach of the boys’ basketball team; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Verl Brown as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his legacy of contributions to the young people of Galax.
