HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 514
Commending Electro-Mechanical Corporation.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 11, 2018

 

WHEREAS, Electro-Mechanical Corporation, a family-owned business in Bristol, has led the way in the design and manufacture of products used in the generation, transmission, distribution, and control of electricity for 60 years; and

WHEREAS, originally known as Electric Motor Repair & Sales, Electro-Mechanical Corporation was founded on September 8, 1958, by Frank Leonard, a Korean War veteran who began his career with General Electric; in its early years, the company primarily served the textile industry in the region; and

WHEREAS, in the 1970s, Electro-Mechanical Corporation transitioned to serve the mining industry and became a leader in power distribution for the mining, tunneling, and dredging markets with the formation of Line Power Manufacturing Corporation; and

WHEREAS, Electro-Mechanical Corporation acquired several other companies with complementary electrical products, including a dry-type transformer company and a switchgear company, which relocated to Bristol; the company also established an aluminum foundry and a machine shop to provide parts and machine services to customers; and

WHEREAS, in the new millennium, Electro-Mechanical Corporation has continued to serve the coal, oil, and gas industries and other commercial customers, while exploring products for high-tech operations that require custom electrical distribution and control equipment like data centers and alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power; and

WHEREAS, Electro-Mechanical Corporation now operates five plants with more than 500 employees in the Bristol area and is still owned and operated by the Leonard family, with Frank Leonard’s son, Russell Leonard, serving as president and chief executive officer; and

WHEREAS, committed to honesty, integrity, and excellence, Electro-Mechanical Corporation is a critical partner in the economic vitality of Bristol, and its employees are active leaders in community events and activities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Electro-Mechanical Corporation hereby be commended on the occasion of its 60th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Electro-Mechanical Corporation as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the company’s legacy of contributions to the Bristol community and innovations in the electrical industry.
