SUMMARY AS ENACTED WITH GOVERNOR'S RECOMMENDATION:

Wineries; dogs allowed inside. Provides that dogs may be allowed within a designated area inside or on the premises of a licensed winery or farm winery, distillery, or brewery or farm brewery, except in any area used for the manufacture of food products. Current law provides that no animal shall be permitted in any area used for the manufacture of food products, with certain exceptions for guard or guide animals.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Agriculture; food and drink sanitary requirements; exception for companion animals in wineries. Provides that a companion animal, as defined in § 3.2-6500, may be allowed inside or on the premises of a licensed winery or farm winery, provided that the presence of the companion animal in such areas is unlikely to result in contamination of food, food contact surfaces, or food packaging materials. "Food" is currently defined in Title 3.2 (Agriculture, Animal Care, and Food) to include, among other things, all articles used for drink, and all substances or ingredients used in the preparation thereof, intended for human consumption and introduction into commerce. Current law prohibits the presence of any animal in any area used for the manufacture or storage of food products, except for guard or guide animals under certain circumstances.
