SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 62
Commending George Hirschmann.

WHEREAS, George Hirschmann, who has admirably served viewers of WHSV-TV3 in Harrisonburg for 16 years as a longtime meteorologist, retired on March 2, 2016, bringing to a close a career in which he was a familiar and trusted presence in thousands of households in the Shenandoah Valley; and

WHEREAS, George Hirschmann was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and earned a bachelor’s degree from LaSalle University; he then served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy for several years; and

WHEREAS, meteorology was George Hirschmann’s second career after leaving the military; he first made a living as a comedian and actor for 30 years, performing stand-up comedy in venues across the United States and working with some of the country’s most famous entertainers; and

WHEREAS, in addition to sharing the stage with stars such as Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Robin Williams, George Hirschmann acted in television shows and commercials; he had speaking roles in Married With Children, Step by Step, and Coach, and portrayed the Orkin Man in commercials; and

WHEREAS, in the late 1990s, George Hirschmann returned to school to study broadcast meteorology, enrolling in an online course at Mississippi State University, and in 2000, he joined the staff of WHSV-TV3; and

WHEREAS, George Hirschmann acknowledges that he was a bit nervous on his first day of work at the Harrisonburg station, but he soon became a trusted professional and is well-known throughout the Harrisonburg area; and

WHEREAS, as a beloved local celebrity, George Hirschmann has been master of ceremonies at innumerable events, judged competitions, and is a sought-after speaker at schools, churches, and community groups; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, George Hirschmann plans to remain in Harrisonburg, play golf, and perform comedy, and he is considering becoming involved in local government; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That George Hirschmann, meteorologist for WHSV-TV3 in Harrisonburg, hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement on March 2, 2016; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George Hirschmann as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations and admiration for his service to the people of Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley as a trusted weather forecaster, and best wishes in retirement.
