SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 51 Commending the Westfield High School football team.   Agreed to by the Senate, February 25, 2016  

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School football team capped off an impressive season by winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 6A state championship; and

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School Bulldogs from Fairfax County defeated a talented team from Oscar Smith High School 49–42 in the triple-overtime game played on December 12, 2015, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville; and

WHEREAS, the team from Chantilly had a strong start, leading 14–0 early on; their opponents then tied the game, but the Westfield Bulldogs scored another touchdown just before halftime to take a 21–14 lead; and

WHEREAS, the game was up for grabs during the second half as both teams mounted strong offensive and defensive efforts, and by the end of regulation time the game was tied; it took three overtime periods and a thrilling goal-line defensive effort by Westfield High School to decide the state champion; and

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School football team—holding the lead in the third overtime—stayed calm, determined, and focused as its defense successfully held off a fourth-and-goal play from the Oscar Smith Tigers on the two-yard line; and

WHEREAS, under the direction of Kyle Simmons, head coach of the Westfield High School football team, and his dedicated staff, the players honed their talents and skills throughout a season that was full of challenges; and

WHEREAS, the Westfield High School Bulldogs, who now have three state football trophies, were greatly supported by their families, friends, and the entire school community as they aimed for another state title; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That the Westfield High School football team hereby be commended for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 6A state championship; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kyle Simmons, head coach of the Westfield High School football team, as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding accomplishments and winning season.
