WHEREAS, Robbin Thompson, an acclaimed singer-songwriter with a passionate following in the Southeastern United States and the coauthor of the official popular state song of the Commonwealth, “Sweet Virginia Breeze,” died on October 10, 2015; and

WHEREAS, born Robert Wickens Thompson II, Robbin Thompson was a native of Boston and grew up in Melbourne, Florida; he attended Virginia Commonwealth University, where he formed the band Mercy Flight and played with Bruce Springsteen in the band Steel Mill; and

WHEREAS, in 1976, Robbin Thompson released his self-titled debut album, which showcased his vocal talents and passionate songwriting and included several tracks that would become longtime fan favorites; and

WHEREAS, Robbin Thompson wrote “Sweet Virginia Breeze” with Steve Bassett and debuted the song at a concert at Virginia Commonwealth University, then formed a new band and recorded his most successful album, Two B’s Please in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Two B’s Please included a new version of “Sweet Virginia Breeze,” as well as other hits, including “Candy Apple Red” and “Brite Eyes”; the album sold more than 200,000 units and spent nine weeks on the Billboard and Cash Box music charts; and

WHEREAS, throughout his long, fulfilling career, Robbin Thompson recorded several solo albums, toured the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia, wrote songs for movie soundtracks, and shared the stage with other music icons, such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Hornsby, Bonnie Raitt, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash; and

WHEREAS, Robbin Thompson often wrote songs about life on the Chesapeake Bay, and his success inspired generations of Virginia artists; he had served as the co-owner and vice president of In Your Ear Music and Video Production in Richmond since 1990; and

WHEREAS, Robbin Thompson was honored in June 2014 by Richmond CenterStage with the Renaissance Award, and he received further acclaim on March 26, 2015, when “Sweet Virginia Breeze” became the official popular state song; and

WHEREAS, a loving father and grandfather, Robbin Thompson will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Vicki; daughters, Rikki and Wrenn, and their families; his mother, Maybird; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Robbin Thompson, an accomplished singer-songwriter who contributed to the cultural landscape of the Commonwealth and the United States; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robbin Thompson as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s respect for his memory.
