SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 2
Commending Emmaus Baptist Church.
 
Agreed to by the Senate, January 21, 2016
 

WHEREAS, for 150 years, Emmaus Baptist Church in Goochland County has provided spiritual leadership, opportunities for joyful worship, and generous community outreach; and

WHEREAS, Emmaus Baptist Church traces its roots to 1865, when members of the community organized prayer services in the area; the congregation later built and expanded a small cabin for services; and

WHEREAS, Emmaus Baptist Church moved to its present location in the late 1880s; with help and generous donations from members of the community, the church was able to grow and thrive in the early 1900s; and

WHEREAS, in the first half of the twentieth century, Emmaus Baptist Church expanded its ministries and community outreach programs to better serve the congregation and other local residents; and

WHEREAS, in 1953, Emmaus Baptist Church completed plans to construct a new, modern sanctuary, which was dedicated in 1959; the church continued to grow over the next two decades, adding education rooms and a fellowship hall as well as new ministries and worship services; and

WHEREAS, as one of the oldest historically black churches in Goochland County, Emmaus Baptist Church has hosted countless weddings, funerals, appreciation services, and baptisms in its 150-year history; and

WHEREAS, Emmaus Baptist Church has inspired numerous individuals to take up the calling of religious service; many former members of the congregation have gone on to share the goodwill and fellowship of their home church as pastors throughout the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Emmaus Baptist Church hereby be commended for its many contributions to the residents of Goochland County on the occasion of its 150th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Emmaus Baptist Church as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for the church’s long tradition of service to the community.
