WHEREAS, lymphoma is the most common form of blood cancer and the third most common childhood cancer; and

WHEREAS, more than 80,000 new cases of lymphoma are diagnosed each year in the United Sates, including 1,900 cases in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, awareness and education are powerful tools in the race to find a cure for lymphoma, and a cure for the disease can only be realized through advanced research and effective treatment; and

WHEREAS, the health and vitality of the residents of the Commonwealth are significantly enhanced by local efforts to increase communication and education regarding the early diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma; and

WHEREAS, nonprofit organizations, such as the Lymphoma Research Foundation, offer a wide range of support services for people with lymphoma and their families and caregivers; and

WHEREAS, Lymphoma Awareness Day helps raise general awareness of the disease and provides hope to people fighting lymphoma and other blood cancers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly designate September 15, in 2016 and in each succeeding year, as Lymphoma Awareness Day in Virginia; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Lymphoma Research Foundation so that members of the organization may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it

RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the Senate post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
