16104247DWHEREAS, Eleanor Jane Friel, a patriotic member of the Virginia Beach community and respected former member of the Civil Air Patrol, died on April 17, 2015; and
WHEREAS, a native of Chicago, Eleanor Friel pursued a career in journalism with the Chicago Post-Tribune; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor Friel joined many of the other young women and men of her generation in service to the nation during World War II; she volunteered with the United States Army at Vaughan General Hospital and trained as a pilot to become a flight navigator with the Civil Air Patrol; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of her courageous service in defense of the homeland during World War II, Eleanor Friel and the other members of the Civil Air Patrol received the Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian honors in the United States; and
WHEREAS, later in life, Eleanor Friel spread joy to others through her skill and passion as an artist, and she was an active member of the Tidewater community; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Joseph, Eleanor Friel will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Deborah, Randolph, and Joseph III, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Eleanor Jane Friel, a respected member of the Virginia Beach community who served her country as a member of the Civil Air Patrol; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Eleanor Jane Friel as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
