2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, McGee Grocery Store in Scott County has served the community for more than 80 years by providing a wide variety of quality products in one convenient location; and
WHEREAS, in the 1930s, James McGee took over the small store in the Yuma commissary building that served the local residents, most of whom worked for the railroad; and
WHEREAS, James McGee already worked at a store in Gate City and hired his sister to run McGee Grocery Store, which is also affectionately known as the Yuma Mall; with no start-up money, he convinced the owner of the Gate City store to provide stock for the new business; and
WHEREAS, when McGee Grocery Store opened, James McGee used a cigar box as a cash register, but within a year, he helped the business grow from its humble beginnings and built a new building on the store’s present location; and
WHEREAS, proudly boasting the slogan “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it,” McGee Grocery Store offers everything from groceries to hardware to plumbing and electrical supplies and is open six days a week; and
WHEREAS, McGee Grocery Store owes much of its success to its many dedicated employees who helped ensure the pinnacle of customer service, including Margaret Thacker, who has worked at McGee Grocery Store for more than 30 years, and Margaret Davis, a 60-year veteran of the store; and
WHEREAS, in 2015, McGee Grocery Store is run by James McGee’s son, Jimmy, who has been working in the store since he was a child; possessing an intimate knowledge of the store’s history and unique stock, Jimmy McGee is well prepared to continue serving the Yuma community for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That McGee Grocery Store hereby be commended for more than 80 years of continuous service to the residents of Yuma; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to McGee Grocery Store as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for its long history and many contributions to the community.
