HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 23
Commending Tony Rice.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 15, 2016

 

WHEREAS, Tony Rice, a Danville native, has made many exceptional contributions to American music as a singer, songwriter, and renowned bluegrass, folk, and jazz guitarist; and

WHEREAS, born David Anthony Rice, Tony Rice grew up in Southern California, where he cultivated his appreciation for traditional bluegrass as well as contemporary stylings; and

WHEREAS, following in his father’s footsteps as a musician, Tony Rice became a charter member of the Bluegrass Alliance, an early contemporary bluegrass group, after relocating to Kentucky in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Tony Rice later played with J.D. Crowe and the New South and the David Grisman Quintet before forming the Bluegrass Album Band, a supergroup comprising some of the biggest names in the genre; and

WHEREAS, Tony Rice highlighted his unique blend of bluegrass and other genres on solo and duet recordings; recorded two albums with brothers Larry, Ron, and Wyatt; and contributed to Out of the Woodwork, an album of traditional bluegrass; and

WHEREAS, a talented multi-instrumentalist, Tony Rice is known for his skill as a guitarist, but is also featured on recordings playing drums, piano, soprano sax, and other traditional bluegrass instruments; and

WHEREAS, in the course of his celebrated career, Tony Rice earned a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance with J.D. Crowe and the New South and multiple awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association, including induction into the organization’s Hall of Fame; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Tony Rice hereby be commended as an innovative leader in American music who has delighted countless fans and influenced generations of musicians; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tony Rice as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for his contributions to the cultural heritage of the United States.
