2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Walter Willson Craigie, Jr., of Richmond, former State Treasurer and Secretary of Finance for the Commonwealth of Virginia, who was a leader in the investment banking and securities industries, proud veteran of the United States military, and an outstanding community leader, philanthropist, and devoted husband and father, died on March 3, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Walter Craigie graduated from Woodberry Forest School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University; after serving the nation as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, he returned to school and earned a master’s degree from Harvard University; and
WHEREAS, a respected businessman who was trusted for his insight and acumen, Walter Craigie worked for the municipal investment firm of F. W. Craigie & Company; and
WHEREAS, Walter Craigie served the people of Virginia as State Treasurer and was also Secretary of Finance for the Commonwealth, responsible for all financial transactions of the state; he provided advice and counsel for the prudent investment of state funds and efficient management of financing needs; and
WHEREAS, Walter Craigie’s guidance was sought by top state officials for many years; he served for more than 40 years as an advisor on state government finances and budgets under 10 governors; he also was a member of the Virginia Debt Capacity Advisory Committee and the board of the Washington Airports Task Force; and
WHEREAS, after leaving public service, Walter Craigie worked for Wheat First Securities and later for Morgan Keegan & Company; he was a generous community supporter and benefactor to many organizations, including Woodberry Forest School, Randolph-Macon College, St. John’s Church Foundation, MCV Foundation, and the Montpelier Foundation; and
WHEREAS, Walter Craigie will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by Berenice “Beese” Craigie, his wife of nearly 59 years; his children, Anne and Frances, and their families; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Walter Willson Craigie, Jr., of Richmond, an esteemed Virginian who admirably served the Commonwealth as State Treasurer and Secretary of Finance and who was an outstanding community leader and benefactor and a devoted husband and father; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Walter Willson Craigie, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
