2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department in Shacklefords has safeguarded the lives and property of King and Queen County residents for 25 years; and
WHEREAS, the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department traces its roots to 1990 when a group of citizens worked to contain a fire in Cricket Shores until the West Point Volunteer Fire Department arrived; and
WHEREAS, soon thereafter, a group of local residents—Fred Hodges, James Kelly Tucker, T. A. Haynes, Howard Chandler, Walter Bristow, Lewis McAdams, Steve Otto, Larry Welch, Tom Kinsey, Jack Wills, Harry Chapman, Freddie Eldridge, Buddy Pierce, and Lafayette Chandler—formed the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department under the department’s first chief, Keith Harver; and
WHEREAS, the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department made its first headquarters in a trailer at Tucker’s Recreational Park and Marina; the department’s first station was later built on land donated by Doswell and Alise Roane in Gressitt and its first water tanker was a converted oil truck; and
WHEREAS, the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department built its Shacklefords station in 2004 and began offering emergency medical services in 2010; and
WHEREAS, today, the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department ably serves and safeguards the community with approximately 60 active members, three ambulances, two fire engines, one tanker, and one rescue truck; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department hereby be commended on the occasion of its 25th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Mark Chandler, Chief of the Lower King and Queen Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ admiration for the department’s service to the residents of King and Queen County.
