Celebrating the life of Harold Lloyd Johnston, Sr.

WHEREAS, Harold Lloyd Johnston, Sr., of Salem, who mentored and inspired countless students as a football coach and educator, died on January 2, 2016; and

WHEREAS, a native of Calgary, Canada, Harold “Hal” Lloyd Johnston, Sr., moved to Mexico and California with his family; he attended the University of Southern California before joining many of the other young men of his generation as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Hal Johnston completed his education at the University of Miami, where he played quarterback on the football team for two years and set several school records; and

WHEREAS, soon after the birth of his first child, Hal Johnston relocated to Campbell County, and he began a long and fulfilling career in education and coaching at Virginia Episcopal School; and

WHEREAS, in the 1950s, Hal Johnston became the head football coach at Andrew Lewis High School, where he mentored several talented assistant coaches who went on to achieve great success as coaches; and

WHEREAS, Hal Johnston established the football program at Northside High School and also worked at Lord Botetourt High School, then became the first principal of what is now Northside Middle School; and

WHEREAS, as an administrator, Hal Johnston strove to ensure that the young people in his care were heard and understood; after his retirement as principal of Northside Middle School, he served as a high school basketball official; and

WHEREAS, a man who lived his faith through his actions, Hal Johnston enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Virginia, Hal Johnston will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Linda, Hal, Jr., and Don, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Harold Lloyd Johnston, Sr., a highly admired coach and educator in Salem; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harold Lloyd Johnston, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
