Celebrating the life of the Reverend Charles Walter Gibson.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Charles Walter Gibson of Chester, who began his work in ministry as a college student and faithfully served for 65 years and who was a devoted father and husband, died on January 11, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Charles Gibson graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond in 1948, where he was a member of F Company of the Corps of Cadets, achieving the rank of regimental captain quartermaster; he then attended the University of Richmond and belonged to Alpha Delta fraternity; and

WHEREAS, at age 20 when he was still in college, Charles Gibson entered the ministry, serving at Graceland Baptist Church in Powhatan; he discovered that he loved the ministry and his greatest joy was preaching from the pulpit; and

WHEREAS, during his career, Charles Gibson served at numerous Baptist churches in the Commonwealth, including Cosby Memorial, Emmanuel in Manassas, Lyndale, Oak Grove, Amelia, and Wilroy Baptist Church in Suffolk; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Charles Gibson participated in 10 international mission trips; on three of those occasions, he worked among a native tribe in Panama; he also led six mission trips to Guatemala, and in 1984, he served in India with a Partnership Evangelism team; and

WHEREAS, Charles Gibson demonstrated his life of faith by helping to organize the chaplaincy program at Chippenham Hospital, where he was a volunteer chaplain; he also was chaplain at hospitals in Suffolk and Manassas; and

WHEREAS, in retirement, Charles Gibson was an interim pastor for 15 churches in the Commonwealth and was secretary and president of the Intentional Interim Ministry network; in all, he devoted 65 years to service and ministry; and

WHEREAS, in his leisure time, Charles Gibson built furniture as a hobby, and his favorite way to relax was to ride his motorcycle; he also enjoyed camping trips with family and friends, boating, and teaching young people how to water-ski; and

WHEREAS, Charles Gibson will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Jean; children, Michael, Stephen, and Dwayne, and their families; and many other family members, friends, and church members; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Reverend Charles Walter Gibson of Chester, a faithful and long-serving Baptist minister and a devoted husband and father; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend Charles Walter Gibson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
