2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center celebrated its 100th anniversary of providing outstanding medical care to the residents of Newport News in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center was established in December 1915 as a result of the diligent and visionary efforts of local business leaders, who raised $10,000 toward the construction of a 50-bed hospital, originally named Newport News General and Non-Sectarian Hospital, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, the original Riverside Regional Medical Center was located at Huntington Avenue and 50th Street in Newport News; it moved to its present location, a 72-acre, 450 bed building, at 500 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in 1962; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, the Pavilion was opened, which added 250,000 square feet and 72 private patient rooms to Riverside Regional Medical Center, which now also features new operating rooms, suites, and a pharmacy; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center’s residency program has graduated more than 976 family and OB/GYN doctors from its teaching programs and more than 4,000 from its School of Health Professions; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department and Level II Trauma Center houses 42 private rooms and responds to more than 68,000 emergencies annually; and
WHEREAS, since 1915, Riverside Regional Medical Center has evolved into the Riverside Health System, with more than 10,000 team members providing services in more than 200 locations throughout Virginia; and
WHEREAS, in 1974, Riverside Health System purchased Patrick Henry Hospital for the Chronically Ill and has transformed to become the largest integrated network of services for older adults in the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center has earned the distinction of “Most Wired” for 10 consecutive years from Hospitals & Health Networks magazine for its early adoption and implementation of electronic medical records in 1996 and many other accomplishments in the field of information technology; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center is governed by a board of directors, as are each of its affiliates throughout the region; and
WHEREAS, Riverside Regional Medical Center’s mission statement is “to care for others as we would care for those we love—to enhance their well-being and improve their health”; it has succeeded in its mission thanks to the hard work and dedication of its leadership, doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Riverside Regional Medical Center hereby be commended on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Riverside Regional Medical Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its dedicated service to the residents of Newport News.
