2016 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Highland Springs High School football team capped off an impressive season by winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 5A championship; and
WHEREAS, the Highland Springs High School football team defeated a talented squad from Stone Bridge High School in Loudoun County 27 - 7; the title game was held on December 12, 2015, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville; and
WHEREAS, in the championship contest, the Highland Springs High School Springers started strong and were lightning quick; the team from Henrico County scored a 61-yard touchdown on its third offensive play of the game; and
WHEREAS, the Highland Springs High School Springers possessed power, speed, and agility throughout the season and those talents came to the forefront in the championship game; the team scored on running plays and passes and had a dominating defense; and
WHEREAS, five times during the Highland Springs High School Springers’ run to the championship, the opposing team walked off the field scoreless at game’s end; the Springers were disciplined and focused, and the coaching staff, which is ably led by head coach Loren Johnson, honed the players’ skills all season long; and
WHEREAS, the fans and players of Highland Springs High School have waited many years for a state championship; the Springers last were named the best football team in the Commonwealth in 1961—more than a half century ago; and
WHEREAS, the members of the Highland Springs High School football team were enthusiastically supported by their families, friends, fellow students, the faculty and staff, and the entire school community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Highland Springs High School football team for winning the 2015 Virginia High School League Group 5A championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Loren Johnson, head coach of the Highland Springs High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding accomplishment and championship season.
