2016 SESSION
16105991DWHEREAS, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Danville plant, the largest producer of commercial truck and bus tires and aircraft tires in North America and Danville’s largest employer, proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016; and
WHEREAS, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company broke ground in 1965 and began operating the next year; the plant cured its first tire on November 25, 1966—the first of more than 100 million tires that have since been produced in Danville; and
WHEREAS, the Goodyear-Danville facility is on a 710-acre site on the Virginia-North Carolina border close to U.S. Route 29, with some of the plant’s property extending into North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, the Goodyear-Danville plant has a tremendous economic impact on Danville and the surrounding area; currently, 2,162 people work at the plant, and since it opened the plant has employed more than 9,200 people at the sprawling manufacturing facility; and
WHEREAS, the first tires made at the Goodyear-Danville plant were bias truck and aircraft tires; however, production has evolved to meet changing market conditions, and the plant now produces radial truck and aircraft tires and bias aircraft tires and is the exclusive producer of the company’s newest medium radial truck steer tire; and
WHEREAS, the Goodyear-Danville plant supplies tires to many of the world’s leading truck and aircraft manufacturers and trucking companies, including Airbus, Boeing, FedEx Corporation, Fleetwood, Inc., the Freightliner division of Daimler Trucks North America, LLC, most major airlines, and the United States military; and
WHEREAS, the economic impact of the Goodyear-Danville plant is measured at an estimated $1.25 billion of total output; the plant and its employees also contribute to the community in many ways, including sponsoring the annual Ed Steffey Memorial Education Open golf tournament; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Danville plant on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Romero, manager of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Danville plant, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the plant’s outstanding contributions and many economic benefits to Danville and the surrounding area.
