Commending Charles E. Jett.

WHEREAS, Charles E. Jett, a respected leader in the field of law enforcement and a dedicated public servant, retired as Sheriff of Stafford County after 37 years of work to safeguard the community; and

WHEREAS, Charles Jett began his career in law enforcement working in the county jail in 1978; he later served as a road deputy in the detective and narcotics divisions and as captain in charge of field operations before taking office as sheriff in 2000; and

WHEREAS, as a lifelong resident of Stafford County, Charles Jett’s unique knowledge of the region helped him to serve and protect one of the fastest-growing communities in the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, when Charles Jett joined the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, there were 22 deputies and five dispatchers serving fewer than 40,000 residents; in 2015, the population of the county had grown to more than 136,000, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is currently staffed by more than 240 officers; and

WHEREAS, Charles Jett encouraged his deputies to foster trust and respect between the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and members of the public and strove to maintain high levels of transparency and accountability; and

WHEREAS, admired as one of the most knowledgeable sheriffs in the Commonwealth, Charles Jett served as chair of the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission, past president of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association, and a member of numerous other peer organizations as well as state chair of the Virginia Special Olympics; he is currently chair of the Criminal Justice Services Board; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Charles Jett plans to seek new opportunities to serve the community and spend more time with his wife, Ann, and sons, Steven and David; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Charles E. Jett on the occasion of his retirement as Sheriff of Stafford County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles E. Jett as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his contributions to the Stafford County community and best wishes on a well-earned retirement.
