HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 180
Celebrating the life of H. William Greenup.

WHEREAS, H. William Greenup, a patriotic veteran and dedicated public servant who worked to strengthen the Fredericksburg community as a former mayor and city council member, died on May 8, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Ohio, H. William “Bill” Greenup graduated from Brookside High School and attended Ohio State University, where he was a member of the university’s first lacrosse team, and the University of Oklahoma; and

WHEREAS, Bill Greenup relocated to Fredericksburg in 1958 as a member of the United States Marine Corps; he later retired as director of the Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, where he achieved the rank of colonel; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to his fellow residents, Bill Greenup ran for and was elected to the Fredericksburg City Council, where he guided the city through periods of growth and change from 1988 to 1996 as a council member and from 1996 to 2000 as mayor; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his 12-year career in local government, Bill Greenup helped facilitate the city’s entry in to the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission and proudly helped bring the Virginia Railway Express to Fredericksburg; he earned a reputation as an attentive, professional, and fair leader; and

WHEREAS, Bill Greenup also volunteered his time and wise leadership with the Central Rappahannock Regional Library Board, the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, and the Fredericksburg City School Board; he enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a longtime member of St. George’s Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his beloved wife of more than 55 years, Mary, Bill Greenup will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of H. William Greenup, a respected veteran and public servant in Fredericksburg; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of H. William Greenup as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
