Celebrating the life of John Edward Hughes.

WHEREAS, John Edward Hughes, an award-winning journalist and a respected resident of Staunton who took pride in serving the community and the Commonwealth, died on October 17, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Roanoke, John Hughes graduated from Jefferson High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University; he honorably served his country as a member of the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, John Hughes learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age; he held numerous jobs throughout his life and began his career as a journalist with what is now the Roanoke Times while he was a student; and

WHEREAS, during his 60-year career in journalism, John Hughes worked for the Charlotte Observer and the News-Gazette, where he was known for his column “Random Ramblings”; he cofounded a court reporting firm and was a familiar face at courthouses in Rockbridge County; and

WHEREAS, John Hughes served as the sports information director and curator of Lee Chapel at Washington and Lee University; in 2008, he was honored with a seat bearing his name at Wilson Field in recognition of his countless contributions to the university’s athletic programs; and

WHEREAS, John Hughes was an avid racquetball player; he won several medals, including a gold medal, in the Virginia Senior Games and represented the Commonwealth in the National Senior Games, ranking 16th in the nation in the over-70 age group; and

WHEREAS, a dependable husband, father, grandfather, and brother, John Hughes cared deeply for his family, and he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by numerous family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of John Edward Hughes, an admired journalist and active member of the Staunton community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Edward Hughes as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
