15105293DWHEREAS, Linda Byers, a faithful public servant to the residents of Amherst County who worked to strengthen and enhance the community, retired as commissioner of the revenue in July 2014; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Amherst County, Linda Byers worked in the office of the Amherst Circuit Court, then joined the Amherst Department of the Commissioner of the Revenue in 1981; and
WHEREAS, Linda Byers was elected commissioner of the revenue in 2004; she was responsible for assessing the value of real estate and personal property taxes, and she ably served the department and the taxpayers of Amherst County during her tenure; and
WHEREAS, Linda Byers witnessed numerous milestones for the department and adapted to many changes in technology and procedures; when she joined the department, work was done on typewriters, accounting machines, and carbon paper; and
WHEREAS, under Linda Byers’ leadership, the department focused on providing excellent customer service; she worked diligently to help members of the public understand the tax process; and
WHEREAS, Linda Byers cared deeply for the well-being of her fellow residents, even traveling to the homes of elderly community members to help them fill out forms for a tax-relief program; and
WHEREAS, an exemplar of the professionalism and dedication displayed by local public servants throughout the Commonwealth, Linda Byers left a legacy of excellence to her successor as commissioner of the revenue; and
WHEREAS, Linda Byers plans to spend her well-earned retirement traveling with her husband, Michael, and looks forward to finding new ways to serve and support the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Linda Byers on the occasion of her retirement as Amherst County commissioner of the revenue; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Linda Byers as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her service to Amherst County and best wishes for a happy retirement.
