2015 SESSION
WHEREAS, in 2015, the Council for the Arts of Herndon celebrates more than 30 years of promoting awareness of and interest in the arts by bringing high-quality arts programming to the town; it is Herndon’s officially designated local arts agency; and
WHEREAS, the Council for the Arts of Herndon (CAH) was established in 1984 and incorporated as a nonprofit association in 1985; the idea for an organization focused solely on encouraging the arts had been suggested by the Herndon Mayor’s Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, the goals of the CAH are to produce high-quality arts programming, increase awareness of the arts, provide opportunities for artists to display their talents, improve arts education, and increase financial support for the arts; and
WHEREAS, the CAH also creates opportunities for people who have limited access to the arts; part of the group’s outreach efforts focus on placing art where people live, work, and play, and the council’s programs also enhance appreciation and participation in the arts; and
WHEREAS, a continuing effort of the CAH is to share cultural diversities through art; the council sponsors an art in public places initiative, and holds many classes, lectures, demonstrations, and discussions; and
WHEREAS, the CAH also sponsors Arts Week in Herndon, in which fine art competitions, art sales, concerts for adults and children, a children’s art day, free film screenings, an evening arts walk, and a pottery demonstration attract many arts lovers to Herndon; and
WHEREAS, students also are beneficiaries of the Council for the Arts of Herndon; the group sponsors a Technology and the Arts Competition that is open to public high school students in Fairfax County; additionally, the CAH offers scholarships and grants to support arts education for Herndon students; and
WHEREAS, the CAH receives generous support from citizens, businesses, and the public sector, including the Town of Herndon and the Arts Council of Fairfax County; the council has been awarded grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Fairfax County Council of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and other individuals and organizations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Herndon’s officially designated local arts agency, the Council for the Arts of Herndon, as it proudly enters its fourth decade of promoting awareness of and interest in the arts by bringing high-quality arts programming to the people of Herndon; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Signe Friedrichs, executive director of the Council for the Arts of Herndon, as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for the council’s many years of promoting the arts in Herndon and best wishes for the future.
