WHEREAS, Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble background, worked throughout his life serving the cause of freedom and advancing the public good, having been employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, Governor of California, and President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and distinction for two terms as the 40th President of the United States of America; he earned the confidence of three-fifths of the electorate in 1984 to win his second term, emerging victorious in 49 of the 50 states in the general election—a record unsurpassed in the history of American presidential elections; and
WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by rampant inflation and high unemployment; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan cultivated bipartisan cooperation to enact his agenda of restoring accountability and common sense to government, which led to unprecedented economic expansion and employment opportunities for millions of Americans; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan’s commitment to the nation’s children through bold social policies helped lower crime and drug use throughout the country, and he inspired a new generation of civic and public servants by his example; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan’s commitment to the modernization of the nation’s military helped restore pride in American ingenuity and prepared the United States Armed Forces to meet 21st century challenges; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan’s vision of “peace through strength” contributed to the end of the Cold War and the downfall of the Soviet Union, furthering the cause of freedom and basic human rights for thousands of individuals; and
WHEREAS, February 6, 2016, will be the 105th anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth, and the 12th since his passing; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate February 6, in 2016 and in each succeeding year, as Ronald Reagan Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project so that members of the organization may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter; and, be it
RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
