WHEREAS, Edward W. Jones, the editor of Fredericksburg’s Free Lance-Star, will retire in March 2013 after a distinguished 48-year career in journalism; and

WHEREAS, Edward “Ed” Jones began his career with the Free Lance-Star as a high school intern; after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a law degree from the University of Virginia, he returned to the paper as a reporter; and

WHEREAS, Ed Jones served the Free Lance-Star in positions of increasing responsibility over the years and assumed the role of editor in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Ed Jones remained committed to the highest standards of journalistic excellence as he led the Free Lance-Star through significant changes to the newspaper industry; and

WHEREAS, Ed Jones provided outstanding leadership to the Free Lance-Star, ensuring compelling, fair, insightful, and compassionate reporting of events and issues of interest to readers that led to numerous journalism awards for the newspaper on the state and national level; and

WHEREAS, a respected leader, Ed Jones served as program chair of the American Society of News Editors; as president of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, National Conference of Editorial Writers, and Virginia Press Association; and on several Pulitzer Prize juries; and

WHEREAS, Ed Jones has provided thoughtful insight over the years in the development of the Virginia Freedom of Information Act and currently serves on the Virginia Freedom of Information Advisory Council; he also served in various roles with the Virginia Coalition for Open Government; and

WHEREAS, the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Ed Jones was inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame in 2010 in recognition of his lifetime of exceptional achievement; and

WHEREAS, Ed Jones, a longtime member of the Episcopal Church, will bring a wealth of leadership and communications experience to his new role as secretary and chief of staff of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Edward W. Jones hereby be commended for his commitment to journalistic excellence and service to the City of Fredericksburg and the Commonwealth on the occasion of his retirement; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Edward W. Jones as an expression of the Senate of Virginia’s admiration for his distinguished career and best wishes in his future endeavors.
