2013 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Becky Alexander, the mother of four and grandmother of eight, a retired educator, successful businesswoman, and dedicated community volunteer, has been honored for her work to make a difference in the lives of her family and community members with her selection as the 2013 Virginia Mother of the Year by American Mothers, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, American Mothers, Inc., a nonprofit, interfaith organization founded in 1933, provides educational, cultural, and spiritual programs for mothers of all ages and backgrounds, annually selects State and National Mothers of the Year, and promotes the role of “mother” as a building block of society; and
WHEREAS, as a young single mother, Becky Alexander devoted considerable time to raising her two children and supporting them in their athletic and artistic endeavors; after remarriage, she worked diligently to blend two families with a strong focus on her values of education, community involvement, and family traditions; and
WHEREAS, an involved parent, Becky Alexander was an active member of parent-teacher associations at each of her children’s schools and worked alongside parents, teachers, and administrators to enhance the educational experience for all children; and
WHEREAS, Becky Alexander taught her children the importance of reaching out to others in the community, serving as a Brownie and Junior Girl Scout leader, taking her daughters on Meals on Wheels deliveries, and providing other opportunities for her children to serve their neighbors; and
WHEREAS, Becky Alexander enjoyed a successful 32-year career as an elementary school teacher, influencing thousands of children as she provided a nurturing and positive learning environment in which all of her students could thrive; and
WHEREAS, a successful businesswoman, Becky Alexander owned and operated a math games company for 10 years, which featured her own original children’s math games that help students learn about math; and
WHEREAS, desiring to help other parents, Becky Alexander served on the Old Dominion University Early Childhood Education Alumni Association Steering Committee and taught workshops at local school systems, day care centers, and homes for abused women on The 101s: A Guide to Positive Discipline, a system that promotes positive and appropriate ways to discipline children; and
WHEREAS, an active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Norfolk, Becky Alexander has served in numerous capacities over the years, teaching Sunday School, sending care packages to members of the military, and currently overseeing the Acolyte Program; and
WHEREAS, for the last 10 years, Becky Alexander has generously given of her time to help ForKids, one of Virginia’s largest shelter and service providers for homeless families; and
WHEREAS, Becky Alexander oversees an Angel Tree for the organization at her church and was the creator of a joint Halloween party, where she dresses up and tells stories to the church’s children and the children from ForKids who also enjoy other fun party activities; and
WHEREAS, Becky Alexander continues to take an active role in the schoolroom, volunteering to dress up as different characters and to read to school children; and
WHEREAS, an extraordinary woman, Becky Alexander will be honored at the American Mothers, Inc., national convention to be held in New York from April 25 to 27, 2013; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Becky Alexander on her selection as the 2013 Virginia Mother of the Year by American Mothers, Inc.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Becky Alexander as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her dedication to her family and the community.
