2013 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Andolyn Medina, a senior honor student at Hickory High School in Chesapeake, was crowned Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen 2012 before an enthusiastic crowd at the Roanoke Civic Center; and
WHEREAS, the Miss Virginia pageant promotes intelligent, poised, and highly motivated young women who wish to make a difference in their community and earn scholarship money for their education; and
WHEREAS, Andolyn Medina is the first Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen to have also held the title of Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Preteen, an honor she received in 2008, and to have placed as a semi-finalist at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen pageant; and
WHEREAS, Andolyn Medina studied for two years at the Governor’s School for the Arts at Old Dominion University and participated in the University of Virginia Summer Enrichment Program and the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth programs; and
WHEREAS, an accomplished classical vocalist and pianist, Andolyn Medina was chosen to sing the national anthem at a campaign rally for President Barack Obama in 2012 and was also selected to sing the national anthem at the Miss America pageant in 2013; and
WHEREAS, an active member of the community, Andolyn Medina has volunteered for over 6,000 hours and is a youth ambassador for the James Worthy Foundation; and
WHEREAS, an extremely accomplished young woman, Andolyn Medina has received numerous awards and accolades for her leadership abilities, academic excellence, and commitment to community service; and
WHEREAS, Andolyn Medina was one of four Chesapeake Public Schools seniors selected to be honored for outstanding scholarship, demonstrated leadership, and active citizenship; and
WHEREAS, during her reign as Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen, Andolyn Medina travels across the Commonwealth sharing her platform message of “Peer Empowerment and Community Engagement,” encouraging her peers to become involved in community affairs; and
WHEREAS, the recipient of a full four-year scholarship to Hollins University, Andolyn Medina hopes to study in preparation for a career in medicine and music therapy; and
WHEREAS, an exceptional role model of grace, talent, and intelligence, Andolyn Medina is an outstanding ambassador for the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Andolyn Medina on her selection as Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen 2012; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Andolyn Medina as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for her many accomplishments.
