Commending the East Coast Surfing Championships.

WHEREAS, the East Coast Surfing Championships, the oldest surfing contest in North America and the second longest continuously-run surfing contest in the world, held annually at Virginia Beach, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012; and

WHEREAS, the East Coast Surfing Championships, sponsored by Coastal Edge, presented by Vans Surf, and hydrated by Glacéau vitaminwater, brings more than 800 surfers to Virginia Beach to compete in more than 35 divisions in one of the major amateur events for the United States Surfing Federation; and

WHEREAS, the East Coast Surfing Championships also run concurrently with the $155,000 Vans Pro and $30,000 Vans Pro Junior events and with a free beach festival that includes skate, BMX, and motocross demonstrations; an 8K run; food and drink concessions; live music; and a host of other beach and water activities; and

WHEREAS, the East Coast Surfing Championships, produced annually by the Virginia Beach Jaycees and managed by Resort Management, LLC, draws hundreds of thousands of spectators to Virginia Beach to watch the top surfers in the world; and

WHEREAS, portions of the East Coast Surfing Championships profits benefit several Virginia Beach Jaycees projects, including “Kids to Camp,” the Christmas Shopping Tour program, and the Flame of Hope Memorial; and

WHEREAS, the East Coast Surfing Championships showcase the Virginia Beach area as a premier tourist destination with visitors enjoying the area’s great scenic beauty and many attractions; and

WHEREAS, the 51st annual East Coast Surfing Championships will be held August 19 through 25, 2013; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the East Coast Surfing Championships on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Beach Jaycees and Resort Management, LLC, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations on the 50th anniversary of the East Coast Surfing Championships and best wishes for continued success.
