2013 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, the Salem High School of Salem girls’ basketball team capped an outstanding 2012 - 2013 season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state championship; and
WHEREAS, the Salem High School girls’ basketball team won the Region IV championship and defeated Lord Botetourt High School and Loudoun County High School to advance to the state championship final, where it faced Courtland High School; and
WHEREAS, the Salem High School Spartans, whose strong defense held opponents during the season and tournament play to an average of 30 points per game, kept the pressure on during the state final game; and
WHEREAS, the Salem High School Spartans were led offensively by senior Tay Taylor, who scored 22 of the team’s 51 points; and
WHEREAS, the Salem High School girls’ basketball team’s strong all-around effort and fierce play led to a 51 - 44 victory over Courtland High School and the school’s first state championship in girls’ basketball; and
WHEREAS, the Salem High School girls’ basketball win, coupled with the school’s boys’ basketball team win, marked the first time since 2007 that a Virginia school’s girls’ and boys’ basketball teams won a state championship in the same year; and
WHEREAS, the success of the Salem High School girls’ basketball team is a tribute to the dedication and skill of the entire team, the leadership of head coach DeWayne Harrell and his staff, and the support of the Salem High School community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Salem High School of Salem girls’ basketball team on winning the 2012 - 2013 Virginia High School League Group AA, Division 4 state championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to DeWayne Harrell, head coach of the Salem High School of Salem girls’ basketball team, as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding season.
