Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1.  That § 15.2-1752 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:

§ 15.2-1752. Governmental immunity.

Any academy created pursuant to this article shall be deemed to be a governmental entity exercising essential governmental powers, and any. Any such academy and; its directors, officers, and employees; and any person serving as a trainer at the academy who is  [ (i) employed as a law-enforcement officer as defined in § 9.1-101 or a jail officer as defined in § 53.1-1 and (ii) certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services to serve as an instructor at the academy- certified by the Department of Criminal Justice Services or any person who is a criminal justice academy approved instructor  ]  shall be entitled to immunity in any civil action or proceeding for damages or injury to any person or property of any person to the same extent that counties and their officers and employees are immune. Members of the board of directors of the academy shall have the same immunity as members of county boards of supervisors.
