Commending Yates Elementary School.

WHEREAS, Yates Elementary School, an outstanding school in Newport News, celebrated 50 years of serving the community in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Yates Elementary School opened in 1962, following the creation of a joint school district between Warwick County and the City of Newport News; and

WHEREAS, named for Richard T. Yates, a distinguished member of the local school board from 1956 to 1961, Yates Elementary School offers an exceptional educational foundation to a diverse student body; and

WHEREAS, Yates Elementary School has grown and experienced a great deal of success in its five-decade history; today, the fully accredited school proudly serves 460 students in kindergarten through fifth grade; and

WHEREAS, to commemorate its 50th anniversary, Yates Elementary School organized an “open microphone night,” with students reading their poetry and other literary works to members of the community; and

WHEREAS, with help from businesses and organizations in the community, Yates Elementary School also hosted a birthday carnival, featuring music, games, and ceremonies to recognize the many people who have contributed to the school’s success; and

WHEREAS, the past and present faculty, administration, and staff of Yates Elementary School have worked tirelessly to ensure that students in and around the City of Newport News have the tools and the talents to achieve greatness in life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Yates Elementary School on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Yates Elementary School as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the school’s tradition of academic excellence.
