SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 63
Celebrating the life of Shirley Ann Martin.

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin, a beloved sister, aunt, friend, and respected Virginia citizen, coworker, and resident of Newport News, died on July 15, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin was born on January 22, 1955, in Warwick County, Virginia, to Arlean Moses Martin and Richard Allen Martin Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin attended Newsome Park Elementary School, Carver Elementary School, and Carver High School, and graduated with highest honors from Warwick High School in 1973, ranked 12th in her class of approximately 680 students; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin continued her love of learning as an honor student at Virginia Commonwealth University, later at Hampton Institute (now University), and was actively attending Strayer University, majoring in business administration; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin was an inspiration to all who knew her because of her joy for life and her faith and love for the church; living her faith through her works as a member of the Bethel Temple Church of Hampton where she was actively involved in the choir ministry, the Worship and Arts Ministry, and many other missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin was an exceptional employee of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles since September 10, 2004, dedicated to ensuring the safety of fellow Virginians by her service; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin was tragically killed in a fatal accident, unprecedented in DMV’s history, while performing the duty of road testing a Virginia resident’s ability to drive safely on Virginia roadways for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Ann Martin is dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her two sisters,  Jane and Dori; her brothers, Richard, Darry, Victor, Keith, and Edward; her special nephew, Larry; her special niece, Tashiba; her three nieces and great-nieces; her three great-nephews; and many other family members; and is greatly missed for her bright smile and her loving, helpful spirit by her colleagues at the Williamsburg Customer Service Center, her DMV family statewide, former coworkers, many friends, and the entire community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Shirley Ann Martin, an exceptional woman, an asset to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and a respected Virginia citizen; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Shirley Ann Martin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
