HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 67
Celebrating the life of John Watts Bowditch.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 10, 2012

 

WHEREAS, John Watts Bowditch of Gloucester, a Virginia gentleman whose thoughtfulness and consideration for others touched those from all walks of life, died on February 29, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a proud graduate of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, John Bowditch spent most of his professional career in the automobile industry; and

WHEREAS, John Bowditch, as the owner of McGinness Chevrolet Buick, provided outstanding service to his customers and continued in the industry in retirement, enjoying affiliation with Hutchens Chevrolet; and

WHEREAS, central to John Bowditch’s life was his family; his sons did not doubt their father’s love and pride in them as he attended every wrestling match and football and soccer game they ever played; and

WHEREAS, John Bowditch influenced the lives of countless young men through his participation in Boy Scouts of America; he served in various capacities and was honored for his contributions with the Silver Beaver Award; and

WHEREAS, a longtime member of Abingdon Episcopal Church and famous for making ham biscuits for church functions, John Bowditch served as senior warden three times and as a church trustee; he rounded up all the teenage children of his friends for the largest teen Sunday school class on record at the church; and

WHEREAS, always concerned for the welfare of others, John Bowditch played a pivotal role in the founding of the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic, which provides critical health care services to the residents of Gloucester and Mathews County; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity and compassion, John Bowditch leaves behind countless individuals whose lives were enriched by his friendship; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his son, Leland, John Bowditch will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 40 years, Peggy; son, Sherwood; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected citizen of the Commonwealth, John Watts Bowditch; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Watts Bowditch as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
