WHEREAS, John Henry Anderson Smith IV of Rosedale was named the 2011 winner of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers Achievement Award; and

WHEREAS, the Young Farmers Achievement Award recognizes farmers who have demonstrated success in production agriculture and have shown exemplary leadership in the community; and

WHEREAS, John Henry Anderson “Andy” Smith IV is the eighth generation of his family to live and work on the land; he and his father, who was named the 2010 Virginia Cattlemen’s Association Cattleman of the Year, together operate Smithfield Farms, the 1,400-acre family enterprise that has been designated a National Bicentennial Farm; and

WHEREAS, Smithfield Farms, which is in Russell County, supports a 310-head herd of beef cattle, and Andy Smith, who is an outstanding representative of Virginia’s rich agricultural and farming heritage, is focused on continuing and improving his family’s farming operation; and

WHEREAS, in addition to receiving the Young Farmers Achievement Award, Andy Smith received prizes from national companies and local farming associations that will be helpful in managing a large agricultural operation; and

WHEREAS, Andy Smith attended the 2011 Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention, and he was awarded a trip to Hawaii to compete for honors at the 2012 American Farm Bureau Federation national convention; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John Henry Anderson Smith IV on winning the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers Achievement Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John Henry Anderson Smith IV as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and best wishes in the future.
