12105137DWHEREAS, January 1, 2013, marks the 50th anniversary of the merger of the City of South Norfolk with Norfolk County to form the City of Chesapeake; and
WHEREAS, Chesapeake, although a relatively young city, is built upon a historic foundation reaching back to the area’s pivotal role in the founding of our nation and beyond; and
WHEREAS, residents of Chesapeake are committed to preserving and celebrating the rich heritage that permeates every facet of their community; and
WHEREAS, with a population of more than 223,000, Chesapeake has become a leader in the economic vitality of the Hampton Roads region and the Commonwealth as a whole; and
WHEREAS, Chesapeake’s location; its access to waterway, roadway, and railway transportation; and its commitment to progress make it a prime location for businesses from throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Chesapeake enjoys abundant opportunities for recreation, ecotourism, and cultural pursuits that draw visitors from the region, the Commonwealth, and the world; and
WHEREAS, the City has been recognized by numerous publications and organizations as being a leading location in which to live, to work, and to raise a family; and
WHEREAS, Chesapeake’s development, economic prosperity, and focus on the future make it a city poised to take a leading role in the Commonwealth for the next half century and beyond; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the City of Chesapeake on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the mayor of the City of Chesapeake as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and continued best wishes.
