2012 SESSION
WHEREAS, James Warren Geurin, a respected congressional staffer, enthusiastic community supporter, and admired Sterling District representative who served Loudoun County Public Schools with great distinction while a member of the Loudoun County School Board, died on April 30, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Warren Geurin moved to the Washington, D.C., area with his family in 1976 as an employee of United States Congressman Gene Taylor; he would later serve as Minority Investigator on the former United States House of Representatives Committee on Post Office and Civil Service serving Congressmen Gene Taylor and Trent Lott; and
WHEREAS, Warren Geurin also served as minority counsel to the United States House Committee on Rules serving Congressmen Gene Taylor, Trent Lott, and Delbert Latta; United States House Committee on Rules staffer to Congressman Charles Pashayan; and legislative counsel to Congressman Chris Smith; and
WHEREAS, Warren Geurin was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as director of congressional affairs to United States Secretary of Transportation Andrew Card and entered the private sector in 1992; and
WHEREAS, actively involved in civic affairs, Warren Geurin served as the chair of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Citizen’s Tax Equity Committee, secretary and director of the Sterling Youth Soccer Association, member of the Loudoun County Republican Committee, and former president of Sterling Commuter Bus and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Pastoral Advisory Council; and
WHEREAS, in 1999 Warren Geurin was elected to the Loudoun County School Board, serving as a tireless advocate for students, quality public education, and the school system for 12 years until his passing; and
WHEREAS, Warren Geurin brought a wealth of experience to the school board, both from his professional and active civic life and as the father of children who had attended elementary, middle, and high schools in Loudoun County; and
WHEREAS, a passionate leader known for his ability to effectively work with others, Warren Geurin served as chair of the Loudoun County School Board’s Committee on Curriculum and Instruction, member of the Personnel Services Committee and Legislative and Policy Committee, and liaison to the Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee; and
WHEREAS, Warren Geurin was a strong advocate for new construction and renovations to existing schools to accommodate the burgeoning student population and ensure appropriate student class size to facilitate learning; and
WHEREAS, during Warren Geurin’s tenure on the school board, Forest Grove Elementary School was built and Rolling Ridge Elementary was renovated with the addition of new classrooms, while Sterling Middle School and Park View High School also underwent renovations; and
WHEREAS, a man of tremendous integrity and vision, Warren Geurin served his community and country with remarkable devotion and helped position Loudoun County Public Schools to continue to provide a superior education to all of its students in the future; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Warren Geurin will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Susie; children, Jennifer, Kirstie, and Jeff and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding public servant, James Warren Geurin; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James Warren Geurin as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
