Celebrating the life of Deputy William Ezra Stiltner.

WHEREAS, the entire Buchanan County community was stunned and saddened to lose an admired police officer, Deputy William Ezra Stiltner, in the line of duty on March 13, 2011; and

WHEREAS, an eight-year veteran of the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Stiltner responded to a call for assistance from two fellow deputies who had been shot after they arrived at a local business to investigate a larceny in progress; and

WHEREAS, while establishing a perimeter to search for the shooter, Deputy Stiltner was shot and killed by the sniper with a high-powered rifle; and

WHEREAS, a respected law-enforcement professional and model community citizen, Deputy Stiltner served his fellow residents and officers with great skill and dedication; and

WHEREAS, a man of great integrity, Deputy Stiltner played a vital role in helping the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office fulfill its mission of providing superior law-enforcement services to the local area; and

WHEREAS, a native of Buchanan County, William “Billy” Stiltner was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School, where as an accomplished athlete, he played baseball and basketball; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary role model, Billy Stiltner continued to pursue his interest in sports after graduation, serving for a time as a Little League basketball coach who encouraged his young players to develop their skills and sportsmanship; and

WHEREAS, a kind and hardworking man, Billy Stiltner was an active member of Harman Independent Freewill Baptist Church, where he enjoyed fellowship, study, service, and worship; and

WHEREAS, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Billy Stiltner will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Linda; children, Anna Marie and Steven; grandchildren, Emily and Morgan; his fellow officers; and the residents of Buchanan County; and

WHEREAS, the tragic loss of Deputy Stiltner is a solemn reminder of the perils faced daily by those who serve and protect the Commonwealth as police officers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected law-enforcement professional, Deputy William Ezra Stiltner; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Deputy William Ezra Stiltner as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
