HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 516
Celebrating the life of Russell Vaughan Palmore, Jr.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 28, 2011

 

WHEREAS, Russell Vaughan Palmore, Jr., a prominent attorney from Richmond and respected chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, died on April 7, 2011; and

WHEREAS, a native of Ashland, Russell Palmore graduated from Patrick Henry High School and attended St. Christopher’s School as a post-graduate before enrolling at Hampden-Sydney College, where he was captain of both the football and baseball teams and president of Kappa Sigma; and

WHEREAS, after receiving a law degree from the University of Virginia, Russell Palmore joined the law firm of Mays, Valentine, Davenport & Moore, later known as Troutman Sanders, where he was a partner for 32 years; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable leader in his profession, Russell Palmore provided invaluable guidance to other attorneys through his work as the president of the Richmond Bar Association and Virginia Law Foundation as well as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; and

WHEREAS, a stalwart member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Russell Palmore served his fellow members, the community, and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia with great faithfulness in a variety of positions ranging from senior warden, vestryman, and athletic director to chancellor; and

WHEREAS, a valued advisor who was known for his wise counsel, genuine concern for others, and willingness to serve, Russell Palmore fulfilled his duties as chief legal advisor to the Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia with great diligence and attention to detail; and

WHEREAS, Russell Palmore was a humble servant leader who made numerous contributions to the Episcopal Church as chancellor to the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee and the Rt. Rev. Shannon Sherwood Johnston; past member of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Virginia; deputy to nine Triennial General Conventions; and member of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church; and

WHEREAS, Russell Palmore also generously gave of his time and talents as a board member of the Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia, the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, and Forward Movement Publications; and

WHEREAS, known for his intellect, compassion, and humor, Russell Palmore’s life was marked by devotion to his family, friends, profession, and faith; he will be greatly missed by his wife, Susan Armstrong; children, Annie Witthoefft and Jessie Yancey and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of a respected attorney and the chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, Russell Vaughan Palmore, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Russell Vaughan Palmore, Jr., as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for his memory.
